The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) is an administrative law body of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It was established to review the patentability of one or more claims in a patent only on a ground that could be raised under §102 or §103, and only on the basis of prior art consisting of patents or printed publications. The PTAB conducts trials, including inter partes, post-grant, and covered business method patent reviews, and derivative proceedings. It also hears appeals from adverse examiner decisions in patent applications and reexamination proceedings. The PTAB aims to ensure the issuance of high-quality patents and to allow the most efficient resolution of patent disputes.
