The Manual of Patent Examining Procedure is the central reference for the USPTO registration examination, but candidates should not study it as if it were the only source that can be tested. The USPTO currently identifies MPEP Ninth Edition, Revision 01.2024 together with additional registration-examination source materials.

Current Patent Bar MPEP Edition

As of September 2026, the USPTO's registration-examination source list identifies MPEP Ninth Edition, Revision 01.2024, published in November 2024, as an examination source.

The USPTO also lists additional source materials, including the Consolidated Trial Practice Guide, representation-rule materials, and Global/IP5 Patent Prosecution Highway materials. Check the official source-material list regularly, because the Office states that the materials may be revised during an examination window.

This distinction is important: the MPEP is the primary manual for Patent Bar study, but it is not the entire testable source set.

1. Official USPTO MPEP

The USPTO provides the MPEP free in multiple formats, including a searchable MPEP, HTML pages, chapter PDFs, and downloadable files. For authoritative wording, always return to the USPTO version.

3. MPEP Chapter Guide

The MPEP contains 29 numbered chapters plus appendices and supporting material. Candidates rarely benefit from treating every page as equally important at every stage of preparation.

4. USPTO Registration-Exam Source Materials

Keep a separate link to the official OED source-material list. It is the best place to verify what the registration examination can currently test.

5. Patent Bar MPEP Search Practice

The Patent Bar is open-reference, but lookup time comes out of the same three-hour session clock used to answer 50 questions. Efficient MPEP navigation is therefore a test skill, not just a study convenience.

A useful search-practice routine is:

  1. Identify the likely MPEP chapter before searching.
  2. Search for distinctive procedural terms rather than the entire fact pattern.
  3. Use headings and nearby subsections to confirm context.
  4. Verify exceptions before selecting an answer.
  5. Stop searching when the rule is clear enough to make a decision.

For interface demonstrations and timed lookup drills, use the Patent Bar exam simulator and the MPEP simulator.

6. Prometric Tutorial and Test-Engine Familiarity

Prometric provides a 15-minute tutorial before the registration examination to familiarize candidates with the test engine. The USPTO's current General Requirements Bulletin also explains the basic testing-day structure and reference-material rules.

Review the current official tutorial or test-provider instructions before exam day. Interface details can change, so rely on the current official materials rather than a fixed screen-by-screen walkthrough.

An ordinary downloadable PDF does not replicate the exam environment. A PDF can help you practice document navigation, but the actual test-center workflow is controlled by the Prometric examination interface and the USPTO-provided reference set.

Most candidates do not need to read the MPEP sequentially from the first page to the last. The manual is a reference work written for USPTO examination practice, not a study textbook.

A more practical approach is to learn the tested procedures through structured instruction, such as a Patent Bar prep course, become familiar with the organization of the MPEP, read the sections that control the topics you are studying, and repeatedly practice finding rules under time pressure.
