The short answer
What Is the Prometric MPEP?
The USPTO registration examination, the patent bar, is delivered by Prometric at test centers. While you answer the multiple-choice questions, the exam computer gives you access to the reference materials the USPTO designates, including the MPEP. That copy of the MPEP is what candidates mean by the “Prometric MPEP.”
It is a library of PDF files opened in a built-in viewer, not a website and not a search engine. The MPEP is split so that each chapter and appendix is its own file. To look something up, you choose the file that should contain the answer, open it, and search or browse inside that file.
Because the exam is open-book, many candidates assume the MPEP will carry them. It will not, unless they can find rules quickly. Fifty questions in three hours leaves about 3.6 minutes per question, and every minute spent hunting is a minute not spent reasoning. What Is the Exam-Day MPEP Replica?
The exam-day MPEP replica is Wysebridge’s practice version of that viewer. It opens the real MPEP (Ninth Edition, Revision 01.2024) one chapter at a time, in a window styled after the Prometric PDF viewer, with the same constraints that shape how you work on exam day.
It is designed for familiarity, not for forgery. It is closely modeled on the Prometric viewer but it is not Prometric’s software, and we do not claim it behaves identically on every screen. Check the official Prometric and USPTO tutorial materials before your appointment to confirm the current interface and the list of tested materials.

The workflow
How the Exam-Day MPEP Viewer Works
Whether you are on the real exam computer or in the replica, the same six moves cover almost every lookup. Practicing them until they are automatic is the point of the simulator.
- Choose the file. The MPEP is not one giant document. Each chapter, the Table of Contents, the Form Paragraphs, the appendices and the Subject Matter Index are separate files. Pick one from the dropdown, then press Open.
- Orient yourself with the bookmarks. The left pane lists the numbered sections of the open chapter. Expand a branch and click a section to land on its page, which is often faster than searching.
- Find inside the chapter. Open the Find dialog, type a term, and step Down or Up through matches. Search stops at the edge of the open file, so choosing the right chapter comes first.
- Move through pages. Use the page box (type a number and press Enter), the first/previous/next/last buttons, or the thumbnails.
- Set the zoom. Fit width and fit page follow the window as you resize it. A percentage stays where you put it.
- Switch chapters deliberately. Because search does not cross chapters, a cross-reference to another chapter means opening that file. The Table of Contents lists them all and its lines open the matching chapter.

Search strategy
How to Search the MPEP Quickly on Exam Day
Fast lookups come from decisions made before you press Find. These habits are what the replica is meant to build.
Pair them with timed practice: the Wysebridge exam simulator opens this same viewer beside each question, so you practice the lookup and the answer together. To fit it into your preparation, use the patent bar study plan.
- Pick the chapter before you type. Knowing that a question about reply deadlines lives in chapter 700 saves more time than any search trick.
- Search distinctive strings. A rule number (“1.136”), a statute cite or a defined term returns a short list of matches. A common word like “application” returns hundreds.
- Jump with bookmarks first. If you know the section number, the bookmarks pane gets you to the page without a search.
- Read the passage, not the section. Confirm the exact rule, deadline or exception you need, then stop.
- Time-box the lookup. If two minutes have not produced an answer, flag the question and come back to it.
- Treat the MPEP as confirmation, not discovery. Candidates who have studied the high-yield chapters use the viewer to verify an answer they already suspect.
