The registration timeline

Submit OED application
Apply through the USPTO's online portal with your transcripts and credentials. Processing time: typically 4–8 weeks.

Receive eligibility authorization
Once approved, you receive notice from OED authorizing you to schedule the exam. You have 12 months to sit.

Pay Prometric and schedule
Log in to Prometric's website to pay the $221 administration fee and select your testing date and location. Schedule at least 1–2 weeks in advance.

Take the exam
Sit for the 100-question, 6-hour computer-based exam at your Prometric testing center.

Receive results and pay registration fee
Unofficial results are available immediately after the exam. If you pass, pay the $200 registration fee to the USPTO to receive your registration number.
